The Burning Portal is an interactive creative writing program has students embark on a series of thrilling adventures surrounding mysterious mines in a magical world. Students ignite their imaginations and problem-solving skills through solving puzzles and engaging with the characters in the story. This program fosters strategic thinking, story comprehension, and collaborative decision-making skills, with a special emphasis on descriptive writing skills. The students will be tasked with summarizing various scenes throughout their journey using sensory details and basic figurative language.

Learning Outcomes

  • Summarizing

    Learners develop their summarization skills through their writing assignments and experiencing the story. They take notes on the major events as well as the hints and secrets they find along the way.

  • Story Comprehension

    The plot of the story has several mysteries and routes it may take. Through interacting with characters and completing challenges, they discover all that the story has to offer.

  • Creative Writing

    Taking on the role of narrator, learners engage their imaginations to describe how they envision the events and the world of the story.

  • Collaboration

    Challenges in this course cannot be completed alone. Learners will work as a team to discuss, strategize, and play through obstacles.
