Teachers are often burdened with administrative tasks and responsibilities that take up a significant amount of their time, including everything from record-keeping to creating worksheets and lesson plans. According to a survey by EdWeek and OECD, teachers spend almost half their working hours on non-teaching tasks! As a result, they may have less time and energy to focus on their primary responsibilities, such as engaging with their students.
At Press Start Academy, we spend a lot of time designing for student agencies, and creating student-centered learning experiences. With the rise of generative AI, there has been a lot of discussion about how students can and have been using it for their education, but there is also an opportunity for teachers and educators to utilize this technology - which we are exploring in The Generative Educator, a professional learning series focusing on AI use cases in the classroom.
In the past months, our team has been thinking about various scenarios for teachers that AI might be able to help with. Here are a few examples:
Lesson Planner
An AI lesson planning solution can assist teachers in planning their lessons using machine learning algorithms to analyze data on the curriculum, lesson lengths, and student age. This tool saves time and enables teachers to personalize their lesson plans according to their needs, ultimately leading to improved student performance and outcomes.
Worksheet Generator
Teachers spend a significant amount of time creating worksheets that align with the curriculum and engage students in the learning process. A worksheet generator that can create worksheets tailored to students' interests and link them to the curriculum could increase their level of engagement, and help teachers add variation to their materials to encourage problem-solving and application rather than rote memorization.
Assessment and Feedback
Writing personalized feedback for each student is important for their academic development. Having a tool that turns inputs such as grades, behavior, and targets into actionable items helps teachers save valuable time and provide more detailed and constructive feedback to each student. This, in turn, helps students receive personalized guidance and support to help them achieve their academic goals.
These are some of the solutions that we have explored, and truly believe that they can be a game-changer in education. We are excited to explore these use cases further to revolutionize the way teachers approach their work and enhance the learning experience of students!
